Mozambique’s First IPP

Delivering Reliable Power for 250,000 Households

Gigawatt Mozambique, the first independent power producer (IPP) in Mozambique, has provided a groundbreaking solution to the region’s growing demand for reliable power. In 2015, the company commissioned a 120 MW gas-fired power plant at Ressano Garcia, a key energy hub at the border between Mozambique and South Africa. The plant, powered by Bergen Engines’ advanced medium-speed gas engines, provides a sustainable and rapid solution to meet the increasing energy demand in Southern Africa.

A Rapid Solution for Rising Energy Demand

As demand for electricity continues to rise across Southern Africa, fueled by industrial growth and increasing access to electricity, Mozambique needed a fast and reliable power solution. With millions still without access to electricity, Gigawatt Mozambique identified the opportunity to harness the country’s natural gas reserves, which are located off the northern coast. Gas-fired power plants, which take less time to build than nuclear or coal-fired plants, offer a practical and immediate response to stabilize power supplies.

The Ressano Garcia plant was designed to produce 120 MWe of electrical power and is fully supported by a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Mozambican utility, EDM. This contract ensures that the plant will provide 100 MWe to the national grid, contributing significantly to the country’s energy security and helping achieve the government’s goal of reaching 20% electrification by 2020. The plant also enables energy export to the regional grid of the Southern African Power Pool, expanding its impact beyond Mozambique.

Efficient Power Generation with Bergen Engines

The 120 MW power station at Ressano Garcia is powered by 13 x B35:40V20G2 natural gas engines, each producing 9.3 MWe. These engines deliver efficient, cost-effective, and reliable electricity for local and regional consumers. The plant’s operational efficiency is complemented by our exceptional fuel consumption rates, low emissions, and rapid start-up capability, which is essential for meeting dynamic energy demands.

The project, completed in just 18 months, was a testament to effective project execution, achieving completion on time, under budget, and without any significant injuries. With a 15-year service agreement in place, Bergen Engines continues to ensure the plant’s long-term operational reliability.
