Reliable Power for Bangladesh
Midland East Power Expands Grid Stability with Bergen Engines

Bangladesh is rapidly expanding its power sector to meet increasing electricity demand, targeting a national generation capacity of 38,000 MW by 2030. As part of this ambitious initiative, Midland East Power Limited partnered with Bergen Engines to deliver a 150 MW power plant in Ashuganj. Designed for efficiency, reliability, and fast deployment, the facility features 23 x B32:40V16 medium-speed gensets, ensuring a stable electricity supply for the growing economy.

Fast Deployment and Seamless Commissioning
The contract for the 23 gensets was signed in August 2017, and just four months later, the first units were shipped. Thanks to Bergen Engines’ streamlined production and delivery process, commissioning and full start-up of all 23 engines were completed within a record 30 days. This swift execution underscores the advantages of medium-speed reciprocating engine technology—modular scalability, high efficiency, and rapid response to urgent power demands.
Jeff Elliott, Managing Director at Bergen Engines at the time, reflected on the achievement: “We are delighted to play a key role in Bangladesh’s energy expansion. Bergen Engines has been a trusted partner in the country since 2000, supplying power stations that now account for over five percent of Bangladesh’s total electricity supply. This new plant is another step forward in our commitment to the region’s energy security.”
Ensuring Reliability and Performance at Scale
The power station operates at full capacity, with all 23 engines at 100% load. Designed for continuous operation, Bergen Engines’ gensets offer superior performance over long durations, minimal downtime, and a robust design that ensures efficient combustion and lower maintenance requirements. The engines are capable of running at optimal efficiency regardless of fluctuating power demand, as individual units can be adjusted or shut down as needed.
To further enhance long-term performance, the contract included spare part deliveries over a 15-year period. Bergen Engines has also established a well-equipped workshop in Dhaka, providing maintenance, overhauls, and 24/7 technical support to ensure uninterrupted operation of the facility.
Key Facts

Medium-Speed Engines: A Smart Solution for Urban Energy Demands
Medium-speed engines are an ideal choice for power generation in rapidly developing regions like Bangladesh. Their ability to ramp up quickly makes them well-suited for balancing fluctuations in electricity demand, an essential factor for cities with growing industrial and residential loads. Additionally, these engines offer high fuel efficiency and lower emissions compared to other thermal generation methods, contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable energy infrastructure.
Bergen Engines’ solutions are designed to integrate seamlessly with Bangladesh’s evolving power landscape, providing not just immediate generation capacity but also a long-term, adaptable energy strategy. Geir Tollevik Vestvik, Commissioning Lead at Bergen Engines, emphasized the collaborative effort behind the success: “This project has demonstrated outstanding teamwork across our global service teams. Our experience in Bangladesh, combined with local expertise, ensured we met the project’s tight deadlines and technical expectations.”
Powering Bangladesh’s Future
Bangladesh’s commitment to doubling its power capacity by 2030 requires rapid deployment of reliable generation assets. With a projected need for an additional 6,000 MW in just the next three years, the country is focusing on solutions that can be implemented swiftly and efficiently. Our medium-speed engine power plants, like the one at Midland East Power, are proving essential to achieving these goals.
By leveraging Bergen Engines’ advanced technology and expertise, Bangladesh is strengthening its energy security while maintaining cost-effective and environmentally responsible power generation. The successful commissioning of the Midland East Power facility marked yet another milestone in the nation’s journey toward energy independence and economic growth.
