Energypac’s 108MW Chittagong Plant

Providing Grid Stability for Bangladesh with Bergen Engines

Energypac Power Venture Ltd. (EPVL) has played a key role in supporting the government of Bangladesh’s goal of more than doubling the country’s power generation capacity to 38,000 MW by 2030.
EPVL’s Chittagong Power Plant, located in Chattogram, provides a crucial 108MWe to the national grid. The project was awarded through a competitive bidding process by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), and the plant has been operational since January 2015.
Meeting the Growing Energy Demands

Bangladesh’s rapidly expanding economy and population have put immense pressure on the national power grid. To meet the growing electricity demand, the government is focusing on increasing power generation capacity through both public and private investments. As part of this effort, EPVL, an independent power producer, was awarded the contract to supply 108MW of electricity to the national grid for an initial 15-year period.

Bergen Engines was chosen as the supplier for this important project, providing 16 x B32:40V16 liquid fuel engines. This technology ensures reliable, flexible, and efficient power generation to meet the fluctuating energy demands of the region. With multiple engines in operation, the plant can efficiently modulate its output according to the needs of the national grid, ensuring seamless electricity delivery.

Efficient and Flexible Power Generation

The Chittagong Power Plant has a significant role in ensuring grid stability and reducing transmission complexities. With a distributed power model, smaller power stations spread across the country help to minimize the need for long-distance transmission and improve the reliability of electricity delivery. This decentralized approach is particularly important in Bangladesh, where rapid urbanization and industrialization are driving up the demand for power.

Equipped with Bergen Engines’ reciprocating engine technology, the plant was able to start operations within the tight timeline required to meet Bangladesh’s urgent power needs. The plant can operate with great efficiency, using its multiple engines to balance power output while maintaining high levels of fuel efficiency and low emissions.
