C-Energy
Leading the Way in Clean Energy with Bergen Engines

C-Energy, an independent power provider, has positioned itself at the forefront of Europe’s energy transition by modernizing its infrastructure with Bergen Engines’ medium-speed gas engines. With a strong commitment to sustainability, C-Energy has significantly reduced its reliance on coal, improving efficiency while lowering emissions. By integrating Bergen Engines’ proven technology, the company now provides stable, clean energy to the towns of Tabor and Sezimovo Ústí in the Czech Republic.
A Phased Transition to Cleaner Energy
C-Energy’s journey towards decarbonization began in 2012 when it acquired the Planá nad Lužnicí plant. Over the next decade, the company invested over CZK 2 billion in transforming the previous coal-fired CHP facility into a key energy hub for the Tábor region. In 2015, C-Energy took a significant step forward by installing four B35:40V20 gas engines, marking the first natural gas power plant in the region based on medium-speed gas engines.
In 2019, the facility expanded with two additional B36:45V20 gas engines—the largest and most powerful medium-speed gas engines ever developed by Bergen Engines. These new units each feature 20 cylinders and deliver an additional 23 MWe to the grid, reinforcing the plant’s role as a key contributor to regional energy security.
Key Facts

Maximum Efficiency, Minimal Emissions
With a combined capacity of over 60 MWe, C-Energy’s facility sets a new benchmark for combined heat and power (CHP) efficiency.
The plant’s advanced CHP system ensures that nearly all the energy produced is utilized, delivering both electricity and heat to local industries and households. This results in substantial fuel savings, lower operational costs, and a significant reduction in environmental impact.
Optimized Performance & Cost Savings
Bergen Engines’ medium-speed gas engines deliver exceptional fuel efficiency, reducing operating costs while maximizing CHP benefits. Their ability to generate both heat and electricity ensures higher overall energy utilization compared to separate power and heat production.
Environmental Benefits
C-Energy’s greening measures have led to a 90% reduction in harmful emissions, with additional plans to replace coal combustion with biomass cutting emissions further. The plant operates with dramatically lower NOx, CO2, SOx, and particulate levels compared to traditional coal plants.
Scalability & Grid Stability
The modular design of Bergen Engines’ technology allows for phased expansions, meeting growing energy demands efficiently. The engines’ fast start-up capability—reaching full load within five minutes—ensures immediate power availability while supporting primary and secondary grid regulation.
A Smart Energy Solution for the Future
C-Energy’s decision to partner with Bergen Engines underscores the reliability and flexibility of medium-speed gas engines. Whether operating in base-load mode, peak power supply, or combined cycle, these engines provide unmatched versatility and performance. Their ability to balance fluctuating energy demands with fast ramp-up times makes them an ideal solution for urban and industrial energy needs.
C-Energy’s Planá nad Lužnicí plant is now one of Central Europe’s most modern energy facilities, supplying power to the entire Tábor conurbation and contributing to the energy security of the Czech Republic. The site also hosts the country’s largest battery storage facility, enabling uninterrupted power supply to industrial customers even during a grid failure. In 2016, C-Energy’s commitment to innovation was recognized when its plant renovation project won the Project of the Year award from the Czech CHP Industry Association.
John Kristian Johnsen, Head of Sales at Bergen Engines, highlights the strategic advantages: “CHP plants with Bergen’s natural gas engines are a reliable alternative to coal-based plants and are significantly more environmentally friendly. Our medium-speed engines enable C-Energy to operate the plant efficiently, both in terms of cost and time.”
