Peak Demand, Instant Power
Bergen Engines Powers Gopalganj‘s 110MW Peaking Plant

To ensure stability in Bangladesh’s power supply during periods of highest demand, the government approved the construction of the Gopalganj 100MW Peaking Power Plant in 2010. As part of a national strategy to enhance grid reliability, the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) commissioned this project to address peak-hour shortages efficiently.
The plant, powered by Bergen Engines’ advanced medium-speed technology, was completed by Energypac Power Generation in December 2011 and has since played a crucial role in balancing the country’s energy load.
Reliable and Responsive Power for a Stable Grid
The Gopalganj plant is equipped with 16 x B32:40V16 medium-speed engines, delivering a total capacity of 110MW. Designed specifically for peaking operations, these engines provide a rapid response to fluctuations in electricity demand.
Unlike baseload power stations, peaking plants must operate flexibly—starting up quickly when demand surges and shutting down when it subsides. The Bergen engines installed at Gopalganj excel in this role, ensuring efficient and reliable power generation exactly when it is needed most.
Key Facts

A Critical Asset for the National Power Grid
By focusing on peak-hour energy supply, the Gopalganj Peaking Power Plant strengthens Bangladesh’s electricity infrastructure without the need for continuous operation. This strategic deployment of medium-speed engine technology reduces strain on the grid and ensures that power remains available when demand is at its highest—whether during evening surges, industrial upticks, or extreme weather conditions.
With a well-established presence in Bangladesh since 1999, Bergen Engines continues to support the country’s energy sector with cutting-edge solutions for both baseload and peaking power plants. The Gopalganj facility stands as a testament to the effectiveness of medium-speed engine technology in stabilizing national electricity networks while providing cost-effective and flexible power generation.
For governments and utilities seeking scalable, efficient, and responsive energy solutions, Bergen Engines’ medium-speed technology remains a proven choice for ensuring grid stability and meeting peak-hour demands with confidence.
Our Benefits for Peaking Plants
- Fast Start Capabilities
Bergen engines can start from standby and reach full load within minutes, ensuring that a plant can meet the sudden surges in electricity demand that typically occur during peak hours.
This rapid response time is essential in preventing grid instability and ensuring a reliable power supply when the grid is under stress due to high consumption. - Efficient and Cost-Effective
Bergen’s medium-speed engines are designed for optimal fuel efficiency, making them a cost-effective solution for peaking power generation. By operating at high efficiency levels, these engines reduce operational costs, which is crucial for peaking plants that often run during short, high-demand periods. - Scalability for Increased Demand
Bergen engines offer flexibility and scalability, allowing plants to easily adapt to growing power needs. This scalability is particularly valuable in regions where power demand can fluctuate significantly. With the capability to add additional engines or increase the load of existing ones, the plant can scale to meet future demands efficiently. - High Availability and Reliability
Our engines are known for their robustness and reliability. This is a key benefit for peaking power plants, which need to provide uninterrupted service during times of peak load. The engines are engineered to handle frequent starts and stops, and their long operational lifespans further enhance the plant’s reliability.
