Medium Speed Engines’ Impact on Data Center Performance

Medium-speed engines play a crucial role in supporting AI operations and meeting the urgent demand for on-site power generation in data centers.

These engines are renowned for their durability in running continuously over long periods of time, providing the reliable power that is essential for uninterrupted AI processing and data storage. Their high thermal efficiency reduces both operational costs and carbon footprints, which aligns with the sustainability goals of modern data centers.

Bergen Engines features a scalable power solution in their Power of 10 offering, which allows data centers to adjust their power generation capacity according to their growing needs without causing disruptions. Additionally, their fuel flexibility—being able to run on natural gas, blended hydrogen, diesel, and ongoing research with renewable fuels – enables data centers to optimize fuel choices based on availability, cost, and environmental impact.

The Power of 10

A 2020 survey of over 800 data centers found that 78% experienced at least one outage in the prior three years, with over half incurring costs greater than USD $100,000.

As traditional power grids struggle to meet the growing demands of AI, there is an urgent need for independent power generation that can disconnect from the utility grid and provide power on-site. The Langley Holdings’ Power Solutions Division, comprising of Bergen Engines, Marelli Motori, and Piller Power Systems, develops hybrid-renewable microgrids with an aim to efficiently and cost-effectively meet the immediate and future microgrid requirements, while focusing on reduced emissions.

This modular, independent power solution features Bergen’s hydrogen-ready, gas-fired medium speed generating sets fit with Marelli Motori alternators. Incorporating Piller’s Integrated Power Conditioning and Stabilization (IPCS) technology, this solution eliminates the need for UPS and backup generators. Infinitely scalable, the Power of 10 allows data center operators to expand their microgrids in 10MW increments as their demand grows.

Integrating this solution with renewable energy sources like solar and/or wind to form hybrid power systems ensures a stable power supply that utilizes renewables when available, and benefits from the reliability of Bergen Engines for power generation when they’re not. This solution helps to manage peak loads, while maintaining stable and continuous AI operations even during power fluctuations.

Ensuring Continuous Operation

Medium-speed engines feature quick start-up times, which are critical for immediate power backup during grid failures or high-demand periods. Their modular design allows for easy installation, upgrades, and maintenance, making them ideal for data centers that need to expand rapidly to support increasing AI workloads.

Real-world applications demonstrate the effectiveness of medium-speed engines in data centers. For instance, Google uses combined heat and power (CHP) systems with medium-speed engines to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprints. Similarly, Microsoft has explored natural gas-powered medium-speed engines to provide reliable and scalable power solutions for their AI and cloud computing needs.

By leveraging the capabilities of Bergen Engines’ medium-speed technology, data centers can achieve the necessary reliability, efficiency, and scalability to support intensive AI demands and ensure consistent on-site power generation.
