Bergen, Norway —Bergen Engines proudly announces a significant contract with Huanghai Shipyard in China for the engine scope of four short-sea Multi-Purpose Vessels (MPVs), each with a deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 7000. This contract marks a major milestone in the collaboration between Bergen Engines, Skarv Shipping, and LMG Marin, all based in Bergen, Norway.
Sustainable Maritime Innovation
Skarv Shipping, a newly established joint venture between Peak Group and Grieg Edge, will own these state-of-the-art vessels. Designed by LMG Marin, these ships represent a new era in sustainable maritime transport, reflecting the combined expertise and innovation of the Bergen-based maritime community.
Bergen Engines will supply four Bergen C25:33L6A generator sets, which feature a modularized design that simplifies maintenance for cost-effective operation. Renowned for reliability and performance, the Bergen C25:33L includes variable valve timing that guarantees optimal efficiency and transient performance, even during part-load operation, while maintaining low emissions. Additionally, the generator sets will feature variable speed technology to optimize fuel consumption; valuable for reducing operational costs and lowering emissions.
A standout feature of this contract is Bergen Engines’ commitment to future-proofing their technology. Over the next five years, Bergen Engines aims to convert these engines from diesel to ammonia operation, pending the owner’s decision. This initiative underscores their dedication to achieving net carbon zero and highlights their role as a key player in the road toward future fuels.
Innovative Vessel Design
The vessels will boast advanced capabilities such as open-top options for high vertical cargo, wide deck widths, heavy-duty hatches, intermediate decks, forward accommodation for enhanced visibility, and increased deck space to protect cargo. These features make the vessels ideal for transporting medium-sized modules and components for the renewable energy industry, including wind turbines.
Jan Øivind Svardal, CEO of Skarv Shipping, expressed his enthusiasm: “These ships are far more climate-friendly than those currently in the coastal market in Europe, with very low fuel consumption. They represent a significant step toward a sustainable future for shipping.”

Collaborative Effort

Contract details include the construction of four MPVs of 7,000 dwt, with an option for two more. The first ship is scheduled for delivery in Q3 2025, followed by the others at four-month intervals. These vessels are designed to support the renewable energy industry and are highly versatile for various short-sea project class transports.
