Bergen Engines, the iconic medium-speed engine builder, announced today the challenge to build a 100% medium speed hydrogen-fueled engine by December 2024.
Known for its focus on low-emission technology, Bergen Engines has already made great strides in the pursuit of cleaner energy solutions.
Most recently, the company was the first medium-speed engine producer in the world to successfully test a 30% volume blend of hydrogen at 100% load, a significant milestone that sets the stage for the upcoming 100% hydrogen-fueled engine.
Field testing was completed in Caseda, Spain, in collaboration with customer Viscofan at their industrial processing plant, with whom Bergen Engines has a strong partnership of more than 25 years.
These tests marked a crucial step toward the realization of the company’s vision and ensures that the new fuel not only meets the standards established in their controlled test facility but performs optimally in the specific conditions faced by Bergen Engines’ customers.
In the pursuit of a greener future, the company understands the importance of not leaving its existing diesel engines behind. Sustainability, in this context, encompasses more than just the development of new technologies—it also involves responsible management of existing assets.
By maintaining and upgrading diesel engines, including a unique method to fully transform the fuel source to natural gas without losing efficiency, the company ensures a sustainable lifecycle for its products, preventing unnecessary waste and mitigating the environmental impact associated with premature disposal.
The move toward a 100% hydrogen-fueled engine is not only a testament to Bergen Engines’ engineering expertise but aligns with global efforts to address climate change and reduce carbon emissions. Depending on the application, other fuel sources may be better suited, so Bergen Engines is conducting research in ammonia and methanol simultaneously.
Jon Erik Røv, Managing Director commented: “The significance of this announcement extends beyond our company, as it marks a critical milestone in contributing to the broader green transition. We recognize the urgent need for sustainable solutions, and the development of a 100% hydrogen-fueled engine signifies a key step toward achieving a more environmentally friendly future. The company remains determined in its commitment to providing reliable and efficient power generation, while actively participating in the global movement towards a cleaner, greener world.”
As Bergen Engines continues to introduce advancements in medium-speed engine technology, this latest initiative highlights its dedication to creating a greener future. The company looks forward to the positive impact this innovation will have on the industry and reinforces its commitment to sustainability in its operations.
