METHANOL

Bergen Engines believes methanol will be an important fuel option for marine applications and is currently adapting research accordingly, with the maritime industry in focus.

METHANOL: AT SEA.

A BENEFIT FOR MARITIME OPERATIONS

Choosing methanol as a future fuel source for medium-speed engines in the maritime industry offers significant environmental and operational advantages. Methanol combustion emits lower levels of pollutants such as particulate matter, sulfur oxides (SOx), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) compared to traditional marine fuels like heavy fuel oil, contributing to improved air quality and compliance with environmental regulations. Its compatibility with existing infrastructure (such as storage tanks and pipelines) minimizes the need for additional investments, and its higher energy density makes it feasible for medium-speed engines without a significant increase in storage volume or weight.

This existing infrastructure reduces risks associated with transitioning to a new fuel type, providing ship owners with a reliable and cost-effective option for sustainable operation. Overall, methanol presents a promising solution for the maritime industry to achieve environmental sustainability while ensuring compliance with regulations and maintaining operational efficiency.

WHY METHANOL?
  • Engine Compatibility:
Medium-speed engines are commonly used in marine applications, power generation and industrial settings. Methanol is compatible with these engines with minimal modifications, making it a feasible option for certain applications.
  • Ease of Handling:
Methanol is a liquid at room temperature, making it relatively easy to handle and transport. It doesn’t require cryogenic storage like some other alternative fuels, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG).
  • Cleaner Combustion:
Methanol combustion generally produces fewer pollutants compared to traditional fossil fuels. This can result in lower emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter, and sulfur oxides (SOx), helping to improve air quality.
  • High Octane Rating:
Methanol has a high octane rating, which means it can resist knocking in the engine and allows for higher compression ratios. This can lead to increased engine efficiency and performance.
