Next-Generation Gas Engines to Drive E-Methanol Production
Bergen, Norway – December 10th, 2024

Since 1977, Forestal del Atlántico has been manufacturing glues and resins in the Ferrol estuary along Spain’s Atlantic coast, supplying essential products to the wood industry.

Today, the company is transforming its operations, working with Bergen Engines to achieve a near-negative carbon footprint.

A Clean Approach to Energy and Emissions

At the heart of this transformation are Bergen’s 12MW B36:45V20 co-generation gas engines, pivotal to Forestal del Atlántico’s ambitious Triskelion project, which combines advanced carbon capture technology and synthesising methanol using green hydrogen produced on-site.

This green hydrogen not only fuels methanol production but could also be blended to power the gas engines themselves, further reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

This approach replaces fuel oil engines with cleaner, natural gas-powered systems, cutting CO₂ emissions and supporting Forestal’s sustainability goals. The revamped plant will supply essential heat for resin and melamine paper production, provide electricity for factory operations and feed surplus power into the grid.

Delivering Impact: E-Methanol and Carbon Capture

When fully operational in 2027, the plant is expected to produce approximately 40,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually. In the process, it will capture and utilise around 56,000 tonnes of CO₂, positioning Forestal del Atlántico at the forefront of sustainable industrial practices.

One of the state-of-the-art 12MW B36:45V20 co-generation gas engine departing the factory last week to power Forestal’s transition.
Driving the Vision

Andrés Fuentes, Managing Director of Forestal del Atlántico, highlighted the company’s forward-thinking approach:

“We are transforming from a traditional industry to one with a near-negative carbon footprint. This investment reflects our vision to lead the renewable energy sector, demonstrating our commitment to cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.”

Carlos Prieto, Managing Director of Bergen Engines Ibérica, underlined the partnership’s significance:

“We are proud to support this pivotal project, showcasing our role in Spain’s new cogeneration investment cycle. Beyond providing state-of-the-art equipment, our maintenance agreement ensures safe and efficient operation for years to come.”

Transforming Industry, Driving Sustainability

Bergen Engines and Forestal del Atlántico are paving the way for industrial decarbonisation, setting a benchmark for innovative and sustainable energy solutions. Together, they are demonstrating how advanced technology and visionary thinking can reshape industries for a greener future.

ABOUT BERGEN ENGINES
Bergen Engines produces medium-speed liquid and gas fueled engines and generator sets are supplied to a broad range of land-based, commercial marine, and naval applications. The Bergen name is a watchword for quality and reliability in its field. The tradition of engineering in Bergen, Norway, dates to 1855 when the original company Bergen Mekaniske Verksted (BMV) was founded. In 1946, the company built its first diesel engine and has since commissioned over 7,500 of its iconic liquid and gas fueled engines. Around half of them are still in operation today; such is the quality and reliability of a Bergen engine. Formerly Rolls-Royce Bergen Engines, on 31st December 2021, the company became part of the Power Solutions Division of the privately owned British engineering group, Langley Holdings plc.
