What are Biofuels?

Biofuels are renewable energy sources derived from organic materials, such as plant biomass, animal waste, and recycled cooking oil. They serve as an alternative to fossil fuels, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance energy security. Common types of biofuels include biodiesel, produced from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled greases, and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a premium quality biofuel made from renewable raw materials. HVO is processed to create a high-quality fuel similar to conventional diesel.

The Benefits of Biofuels for Marine Operations

Our marine engines, now approved to run efficiently on biofuels including HVO, do not require significant modifications.

Furthermore, biofuels burn cleaner, resulting in fewer deposits and contaminants in the engine, which can lead to lower maintenance costs and improved engine efficiency. Biofuels can be produced locally from various organic materials, ensuring a more stable and secure supply chain compared to fossil fuels.

Bergen Engines’ B33:45 engine has received a formal approval for operation on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), aligning with European standard EN15940 and the U.S. standard ASTM D975 set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). This approval allows for blending of HVO up to 100%, marking a pivotal step toward achieving the EU and IMO’s 2050 vision of net carbon zero shipping.
