Fuel efficiency a key consideration for ship owner Hardhaus

Bergen Engines (formerly Rolls-Royce Bergen Engines) has secured a contract to supply its highly fuel-efficient B33:45L8P engine for the Møgsterfjord, a new 70m purse seiner/trawler for Hardhaus AS.

Built at Karstensens Skibsværft in Denmark, the vessel is designed for optimal efficiency and long-term cost savings, with delivery set for January 2027.

After a competitive selection process, Hardhaus AS and Karstensens Shipyard ultimately chose Bergen Engines, recognising Bergen’s superior fuel efficiency and lifetime cost benefits.

“In close cooperation with Brunvoll, we managed to level the playing field against the competition on providing a complete engine and propulsion solution which is important for the yard,” said Jørgen Wessel Ottesen, Sales Manager at Bergen Engines. “Calculating the fuel consumption based on the operating profile given by the shipowner, we could show our performance against the competing engine maker and appeal directly to reducing OPEX cost for the owner. Our strong reputation on reliability and robustness combined with our performance was decisive for winning this project.”

Advanced Propulsion for a Modern Fishing Vessel

The Møgsterfjord is designed with new features to optimise efficiency in fishing operations, and is equipped with:

  • Main Engine: 1 x Bergen B33:45L8P
  • Propulsion Equipment: A complete Brunvoll propulsion system with gearbox, shaftline, propeller scope and thrusters.
  • Additional Power Supply: A Marelli Motori shaft generator and pony motor for PTO and PTH functionality.

Kent Damgaard, Director at Karstensens Skibsværft, welcomed the addition of another Bergen Engines and Brunvoll propulsion package, noting that this combination has become increasingly popular due to its reliability and efficiency. He also highlighted the significance of Hardhaus AS selecting Bergen Engines, emphasising the long-term benefits of service support and performance optimisation.

Bergen B33:45L – Proven Performance and Sustainability

Developed alongside operators, ship designers, and shipbuilders, Bergen’s B33:45L engine offers outstanding fuel efficiency, low emissions, and reduced operating costs.
Key advantages include:

  • Extended service intervals – up to 25,000 hours, minimising downtime.
  • IMO Tier II compliance without SCR, and Tier III compliance with SCR.
  • Fast load response, low vibration, and structural noise for smooth operations.

Strengthening Industry Partnerships

This contract highlights Bergen Engines’ ongoing commitment to delivering high-performance, cost-effective solutions for the fishing industry. With a strong focus on efficiency and long-term reliability, Bergen continues to be a trusted partner for shipyards and vessel operators worldwide.

 ABOUT BERGEN ENGINES
Bergen Engines produces medium-speed liquid and gas fueled engines and generator sets are supplied to a broad range of land-based, commercial marine, and naval applications. The Bergen name is a watchword for quality and reliability in its field. The tradition of engineering in Bergen, Norway, dates to 1855 when the original company Bergen Mekaniske Verksted (BMV) was founded. In 1946, the company built its first diesel engine and has since commissioned over 7,500 of its iconic liquid and gas fueled engines. Around half of them are still in operation today; such is the quality and reliability of a Bergen engine. Formerly Rolls-Royce Bergen Engines, on 31st December 2021, the company became part of the privately owned British engineering group, Langley Holdings plc.
